Is my sever Apache?
To be able to use your .htaccess file for redirects and error pages, your website must be running on a Linux Apache server. This is how you find out what kind of server you or any website you want to check out is using.

First of all, follow the link above. Once there, type in the URL of the website you want look up the server for in the lower field. Just like in the image below.

Press OK and you will come to the server results. This page looks like this:

As you can see I'm using a Linux Apache server. If your reslut looks pretty much the same as mine you can move on in the .htaccess guide.
If your server is not an Apache server, it doesn't mean that you cannot for example do redirects and custom error pages. It does just mean that you have to do it in another way. If 301 redirects was what you looking for this page will help you out, no matter what server you're using. This page will show you how to create a 404 page on a Windows server.
