How to increase the PageRank of your website

If you aren’t 100% sure of what PageRank (PR) really is, here is a definition:

Google uses a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents (World Wide Web), with the purpose of measuring its relative importance within the set. PageRank is measured on a scale from 0-10, where PR 10 is as high as possible. By having a website with high PageRank, Google knows that the content of your website is of high quality and they will favor your high PR pages in the search engine result page (SERP). Generally, if two pages have the exact same content, the one with the highest PR will have the highest position in the SERP.

how to increase pagerank

So you have understood that PageRank is something of high value in Google? Good, so here is a trickier question:

How do you increase your PageRank?

Since the link analysis algorithm is looking at how webpages all over the web are connected to each other. You should concentrate on getting as many “connections” to your website as possible, in other words, do some SEO and build backlinks. So what you need to do is to build backlinks, backlinks and more backlinks and I will show you how.
Before I show you some good techniques how to build backlinks, it is important for you to know the different values of backlinks. The higher PageRank the page that links to your page has, of more value is the link. No one except Google is 100% sure of the value of links with different PR but I have seen and advocate this theory.

The value of different PR links:

According to an “almost proved” theory the value of a PR 2 link is five times greater than a PR 1 link and so on. This means that a PR 4 link is five times more important than a PR 3 link and a PR 6 link is 625 times better than a PR 3 link!
This sounds pretty unbelievable but it is not far from the truth. If you understand me correct, concentrate on getting as high PR backlinks as possible.

Okay enough about that; let’s go on with how to build backlinks. Here are 5 steps from where you should create your backlinks.

  1. Add your website to directories. Nowadays links from directories have been abused and Google has lowered their value. Some directories are of huge importance though, and those are directories like DMOZ.org. Getting indexed there is not easy and if you don’t pay them, it can take up to 6 months to get there.

Do not use automatic directory submission software. It is important to reach the right directories and therefore you must do your submissions manually. If you don’t want to spend hours or days submitting your site to different high PR and reputation directories, there is a shortcut. You can let others do it for you, this website sells submission services and one of their offers is 30 free directory submissions from directories with PR 4–9. One they are done you receive a report that looks like this. It won’t get easier.

  3. Join forums related to your website niche. Get active in debates and answer questions asked by others. Use your forum signature to refer to your website. It is important that you use your targeted key phrase as the anchor text of the link. Getting backlinks from related forums are always good marketing for your website but only “dofollow” backlinks will carry any weight regarding PageRank.

  4. To check if the forum uses rel=”nofollow” in their links simply check the HTML source code. You can find the source code in the “tools” of most web browsers.

Here is list of dofollow forums that you should check out.

  5. Submit Articles to article directories. Remember that I mentioned the huge value of high PR links? Here is your opportunity to get them. Write unique and well written articles about your website niche; post them manually at the major article directories (e-zines) such as ezinearticles.com. Refer to your site in the author biography. Just by doing this you will be given a valuable link but that’s not all. Articles at E-zines are used by many webmasters as content for their own websites. Many of them copy the entire page including the link back to your website. So if your article is of high quality, it can give you many backlinks (sometimes even of high PR).

  6. Exchange links with other websites. This will give you reciprocal or “three way” links instead of the more powerful “one way” links that you receive from natural link building. Since there are many parties involved in link exchanges, these links have a reduced value in search engines. The pros of link exchanges are that it is very easy to get backlinks and these links are of some value in large numbers from related sources.

    How to find link partners:

Finding link partners is easy as pie, you just have to set up an account at the two leading link exchange directories. I can guarantee that sitesell.com will give you more related reciprocal links than any other directory. They will email all websites that match your keywords to you, all you have to do is to reply with your link information.

Another link exchange directory worth joining is linkmarket.com. With your free account you can send up to 5 link requests a day.

One last solution is to set up your own link exchange form on your website to make it easy for other webmasters to send link requests to you.

  7. Take a look at your competition. I am sure there are many other websites in your niche having a higher PageRank than you. Wouldn’t it be easy to just follow their tracks instead of finding potential backlinks on your own? Yes, it works and it is very powerful.

  8. Finding niche related and high PR dofollow blog is not an easy task. By a looking at a backlink analysis of high PR website in your niche, you will find plenty of those. You can simply visit http://backlinkwatch.com/ and type in th URL of the website you want to analyze, or you can use a browser SEO toolbar. IMO, the toolbar is the #1 SEO tool and it is a must. Follow the steps below to install it.

Step 1: Install/Open Google chrome, click -> tools -> extensions -> download extensions.

Step 2: Download the SEO Status Pagerank/Alexa Toolbar and you will see an (a) symbol in the upper right corner of the browser, the PageRank and AlexaRank of any webpage you visit will be displayed here.

Step 3: Visit a website similar to yours. Once there, click on the SEO toolbar and choose “backlinks”. You will now come to a page full of links, these are the backlinks to the webpage you are visiting.

Step 4: Visit each of these links, they will lead to forums, blogs and websites in your niche were it might be possible for you to get a backlink aswell.
